First GBS Casualty in Kolhapur:

Kolhapur: Amid a surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in different areas of Maharashtra, Kolhapur district reported its first death from the nerve disorder on Friday, officials said. A 60-year-old woman, identified as Gaurabai Gawade from Sonarwadi in Chandgad taluka, passed away this morning while undergoing treatment at Chhatrapati Pramila Raje (CPR) Hospital, they said.
After diagnosed with the GBS the 60-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU). Officials further added that despite efforts from the hospital she did not survived.
Maharashtra health minister Prakash Abitkar instructed CPR Hospital Kolhapur to take all the required precautionary measures to counter following the GBS outbreak in Maharashtra.
In response to this, a 60-bed ICU facility was set up by the hospital administration to handle the potential cases . Health officials said that the number of GBS cases reported this year is consistent with previous years, however the spike in Pune has raised concerns.
Currently, eight patient including three children and five adults are undergoing treatment for GBS at CPR Hospital Kolhapur. Medical Superintendent of CPR Hospital Kolhapur, urged the public to remain vigilant and to take precautions but not panic.
People should avoid street food (unhygienic), and junk food, drink only boiled water, and include food items in daily diet that will help to boost the immunity,” he advised. Meanwhile, the district health department has issued similar advisories to rural and sub-district hospitals.
